Fifty years ago, Red Rum started on his journey to become the nation’s favourite racehorse when he won the first of three Grand Nationals; 1973, 1974 and 1977 and rode into history.
Jeremy Hoare became involved with this legend after Red Rum’s second win in 1974 as his wife Gillian was an equestrian artist, they were given complete access in Southport and on his summer break in a secret Lancashire field thanks to trainer Donald ‘Ginger’ McCain.
Featuring many anecdotes from a highly personal perspective, this is Red Rum’s story told through the eyes of a photographer, television cameraman and author, now a presenter on Purbeck Coast 101’2 FM, all mixed with music from the time.
